THE VILLAGE HISTORY: THE IMMIGRANTS

PROPOSED MEMORIAL
Several descendants of these Nieder-Weisel pioneers have raised enough money to have a memorial erected in Nieder-Weisel as a tribute to these courageous people who travelled half-way around the world to start a new life on the Victorian goldfields, and to the enormous contribution that they made to our society. The memorial, which has the blessing of the Nieder-Weisel civic authorities, will take the form of a bronze bas-relief by Victorian artist Dr Ross Bastiaan, whose work can be seen at a number of locations in Australia, and at several WW1 and WW2 sites such as Gallipoli, northern France, and the Kokoda Track. Pictured below are two of Ross's works: a plaque on the Great Ocean Road (southern Victoria) with Ross standing next to it, and the memorial at Mouquet Farm in the Somme Valley of northern France. The Nieder-Weisel memorial will be unveiled on 3 October 2010 - details of the plaque and plans for its unveiling are set out on the website www.niederweiselmemorial.com.
